Graham Howes and Nick Jacobsen went on a crazy adventure to the Faroe Islands to ride their kites on Sørvágsvatn, also known as Leitisvatn or the "Floating Lake."
Turquoise water, coconuts, and palm trees are trending. People flocking to paradise to fill their Instagram feeds with smoothy breakfast bowls and bikini shots. Well, one thing was sure - Howes and Jacobsen wanted none of that.
"The idea came about in Cape Town over summer. Everyone was booking their tickets to Bali, Tarifa, and Cabarete," Graham Howes tells SurferToday.com.
"Don't get me wrong, spending a week in boardies and a Bintang tank top is tempting, but we wanted something new, something real, something to remember."
"So we rounded up a crew. Myself, Nick Jacobsen, my brother Craig Howes and three of our mates, videographers/photographers Jop Heemskerk, Dean Cothill and Shawn Ogulu."
Destination: Faroe Islands. If you haven't heard of the Faroe Islands, don't worry. Neither had Howes. Eighteen volcanic Islands tucked between Iceland and Norway in the North Atlantic Ocean; a cold and wet place very far from Cape Town.
"What I did know about it was the images I had seen of the 'Floating Lake' above the ocean, surrounded by some 2,000-foot high sea cliffs and waterfalls," adds Howes.
They had a mission: to kiteboard above the ocean, everywhere and anywhere else possible.
The result was poured into "Riding the Lakes Over the Ocean," a short film that captures the beauty and intensity of the spot.
