The International Kiteboarding Association (IKA) announced rule changes in the Twin Tip Racing and Formula Kite classes.

IKA, the organization responsible for managing kiteboarding's racing disciplines, is making the necessary modifications to improve the sport's chances of being included in the Tokyo 2020 and future Olympic Games.

As a result, the equipment used in Twin Tip Racing will be limited to one registered series production hull and four registered series production leading edge inflatable (LEI) kites.

In the Formula Kite class, IKA and World Sailing will select one hydrofoil model and one kite model to be used in the Pan American Games, and in the Central American and Caribbean Games. However, riders can opt for other registered gear in other class events.

"We wanted to ensure a level playing field while maintaining the 'bring your own equipment' principle in the Twin Tip Racing. For the Formula Kite class, we want to make sure a new set of equipment will be announced every four years," the IKA tells.

Kiteboarding companies will be able to submit and register their equipment until May 1, 2017 (Formula Kite) and September 1, 2017 (Twin Tip Racing).

IKA also announced the creation of an Athletes Commission for both Racing and Expression (Freestyle and Wave) disciplines, with full voting rights on the organization's general assembly.
