They say kite sailing is the future. KiteTender blends the world of kiteboarding and sailing in a single watercraft.
The idea comes from Almere in the Netherlands. Peter Renssen and Peter Schermer have decided to create a specially designed monohull for kite sailing.
After four years of research and development, the KiteTender was successfully tested in the water.
The KiteTender 400 model is a one to two-person vessel that is propelled by a classic kiteboarding kite.
"Upwind the KiteTender goes fast enough at a 45-degree angle," Peter Renssen reveals.
"The highest speed measured to date was over 20 knots (23 mph/37 km/h), and yesterday we did 16 knots (18 mph/30 km/h) in the Kitetender 400, with 22 knots (25 mph/41 km/h) of wind."
Fortunately, you do not have to be a pro to ride KiteTender into oceanic waters. If you want to change course just jibe or make a tack. No worries.
The new kite sailing craft allows you to steer with a rudder, and it also comes equipped with a centerboard for controlling the kiteboarding kite.
The developers of the KiteTender recommend you to sail with race kites for more stability and upwind performance.
The KiteTender weighs 75 kg (165 lb) and can be transported on top of your car by using simple racks.
Forget masts. If the wind does not blow, go rowing and enjoy the ride.
