The island of Funadhoo, in Maldives, hosted the first-ever kiteboarding event in the archipelago.

The event took place on the 15th August 2015, and it was organized by the Funadhoo Island Council with the help of the Funadhoo Kite Spot members.

"The youth and the people of the island are hoping for another big event, and mores chances to promote these sports in this island, and in the nearby area. They are proud after making history," underlines Hassan "Rushh" Rasheed, a local photographer and sports enthusiast.

The primary goal of the meeting was to celebrate 50 years of independence in Maldives and to showcase the development of sports in the island. Besides kiteboarding, everyone was invited to try parasailing, wakeboarding, catamaran sailing and paddle boat riding.

The kiteboarding clinic attracted 36 athletes. Some of these new riders came from nearby islands. Funadhoo (Shaviyani Atoll) is one of the multiple and beautiful islands of the Maldives located in the upper north atoll.

Funadhoo has a beautiful sandy beach with a shallow lagoon area, which can be used for wind and water sports. It is also the capital district of Shaviyani Atoll. Looking for waves? Discover the best surf spots in the Maldives.
