Jack Johnson: rock star and accomplished surfer

Singer-songwriter Jack Johnson is an avid and skilled professional surfer and the son of famous surfer Jeff Johnson.

He started surfing at the age of 5, and at 17 he was the youngest participant to reach the finals at the Pipeline Masters in Maui.

Shortly after the competition he suffered a severe surfing accident. The episode eventually led him to quit competitive surfing.

Jack Johnson was born on the May, 1975, in Oahu, Hawaii.

He started playing the guitar and songwriting between the ages of eight and twelve. While attending the University of California, Johnson joined the band Soil as a rhythm guitar player.

The songs he wrote for the surf movie "Thicker Than Water" (2000), which he also directed, caught the industry’s attention. He released his first album, "Brushfire Fairytales", in 2001.

Following the success of "Brushfire Fairytales", Johnson has released five other solo albums.

The talented musician and surfer is also a successful filmmaker and supporter of environmental causes.
