Several top seeds have fallen in Round 1 of the Cascais Billabong Pro 2014, held in four-to-six foot surf at Guincho.

The Prime surf contest plays a critical role in the hunt for the 2015 World Surf League and will decide the 2014 European surfing champion. Many Dream Tour surfers tasted the power of the Portuguese windsurfing wave gem and were eliminated in the first round.

Taj Burrow was one of them. Carlos Munoz and Joan Duru got the Australian and Tomas Fernandes out of competition.

"I haven't had a good result all year, but I'm looking for it and I'm feeling very confident. I've been working on my surfing and tried different boards, so I'm super happy to make my heat," says Munoz.

Jonathan Gonzalez eliminated three-time ASP world champion Mick Fanning. The talented Canarian capitalized on wave-selection and four-man-heat tactics to edge out Fanning and advance alongside Conner Coffin.

"The conditions are really hard right now, so you have to be a little bit lucky to get a good potential wave, and that was my focus in front of this heat and that worked out well," explains the Canarian surfer.

Leonardo Fioravanti, 16, was able to make it through to Round 2, after defeating Adrian Buchan and Tanner Gudauskas. The Italian is trying to jump into the World Surf League. The Roman fighter is one step closer.

"There's definitely a chance for me to get on the WCT, the train might only come by once, so I just have to try and get on it. I'm just going to give it my all. I might not feel 100% ready to take on the big boys, but that's all an experience," concludes Fioravanti.
