Punta Galea: when bottom turns are tough challenges | Photo: BWWT

The 2014 Punta Galea Challenge will be run between December 11th, in the Basque Country, Spain.

The first event of Big Wave World Tour's (BWWT) Northern Hemisphere season is expecting a powerful 30-to-40-foot swell and massive waves.

"This event is fairly new to the schedule, but has been very consistent the past few years. It delivered some of the best rides on last year's BWWT and saw reigning champion Grant 'Twiggy' Baker win the event," explains Peter Mel, ASP Big Wave Tour commissioner.

"After closely monitoring the forecast over the past couple of days the swell we have forming for Thursday's event looks set to provide an incredible platform for these watermen to test and showcase their skills."

The Punta Galea Challenge together with the Todos Santos Challenge in Mexico, and the Peahi Challenge in Maui, Hawaii, comprise the Northern Hemisphere half of the season.

Makua Rothman won the Billabong Pico Alto, the only event run in the Southern Hemisphere season. The 24-man field for the Punta Galea Challenge will be comprised of the Top 12, as well as six BWWT wildcards and six local wildcards. Watch it live.
