Round 1 of the Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach 2015 has been completed in stormy four-to-five foot surf at Bells Beach.

Joel Parkinson proved he is one of the surfers to beat in the event. The Australian bested Glenn Hall and Miguel Pupo with two mid-range scores and a solid display of rail surfing.

"You've got to go with your gut feeling. On a normal day at Bells, you can get in a flow but out here today there are waves breaking everywhere and anything could happen," underlined Parkinson.

"I guess it's a good result for me; I had a pretty bad one at home on the Gold Coast, so I'm really looking for a solid result here."

Owen Wright claimed the highest individual wave score of the men's contest so far - an 8.90 ride - to send ratings leader Filipe Toledo and Jadson Andre to elimination Round 2.

"I didn't know I had an 8.90 because I couldn't hear anything out there. I was just looking for waves with scoring potential, so I was lucky that I got that wave," added Wright.

In the heat of the day, Julian Wilson celebrated a narrow win (0.10 points) over Kolohe Andino and Matt Wilkinson, despite not hearing the scores from the judges.

"It was a hard heat and hard to keep my strategy and keep control and positioning was difficult. My momentum is good, and last year I had a good result here getting a third, so I'm just hoping to build on that," concluded Wilson.

In the Women's competition, Sally Fitzgibbons the highest two-wave heat total of the competition so far, a near-perfect 18.37. She was the standout performer of the day alongside Silvana Lima, who surfed a Perfect 10 wave.

It is one of the sport's most forgotten disciplines. The stand-up bodyboarding movement had its heyday between the late 1980s and early 1990s, but it continues to be an exquisite art.
