The Brazilian Storm blasted the opening day of competition at the Oi Rio Pro 2015, held in Barra da Tijuca, Rio de Janeiro.

The 2014 world surfing champion Gabriel Medina was able to take the pressure off his shoulders and win his heat against Freddy Patacchia Jr. and Alejo Muniz. Crowds gathered as he crossed the beach and cheered as he paddled out.

"I feel good when there are people rooting for you. I'm at home, with all my family [and] that's my home break, so there's nothing that [makes me] feel pressured," revealed Medina.

Adriano de Souza surfed an 8.17 and a 9.73 to show is ready to battle in the world title race. De Souza hardly missed an opportunity in the shifty beach break.

"I cannot pick a better spot to do this than my hometown. I know it's very pressured for me at this stage, but I have some people behind me, supporting me a lot, and I want to say thank you so much," stressed Adriano de Souza.

Kelly Slater was fired up in the Brazilian line-up. The Floridian collected a combined heat total of 19.27 points to move through to Round 3.

"I feel good, the waves are super fun and I watched for about an hour this morning from my hotel to try and line up where I'd sit. I felt really calm out there and in waves like that you just trust your instincts," concluded Slater.

Jadson Andre, Filipe Toledo, Italo Ferreira and Wiggolly Dantas also won their Round clashes. The Brazilian Storm is here to stay.
