Several major upsets marked the opening round of competition of the Fiji Pro 2015, held in four-to-six-foot waves at Cloudbreak.

Kelly Slater was the first top seed to lose his Round 1 heat. The Floridian champion couldn't stop Alejo Muniz from controlling the game when the Brazilian took the lead in the first ten minutes.

"We've been waiting for that heat for so many days. It feels amazing to surf in that heat and get the win. I know it's only the first round, but it feels like a really big win for me because I'm here as a wildcard, and I don't know when I'll be back again."

After watching Adrian Buchan sending Filipe Toledo to the repechage round, Mick Fanning kept focused and did what he had to do in the running Cloudbreak lefthanders.

"Fiji has become somewhat of a second home for me in recent years. It's an incredibly special place with great people and waves. I've spent a lot of time here, and you can't undervalue experience and timing out at these waves," added Fanning.

It was revenge time for Kai Otton, as the Australian blasted his way to a forehand victory over current rankings leader Adriano de Souza.

"I owed Adriano here as he's knocked me out twice before in Fiji - I was ready for payback. Not great Cloudbreak today but decent conditions and really rippable. I love coming to Fiji, and I'm looking forward to the rest of the event," concluded Otton.
