Kelly Slater posted the highest heat total of the opening day of competition at the J-Bay Open 2015, in Jeffreys Bay, South Africa.

In a wind-affected lineup, Dane Reynolds sent Filipe Toledo and Adam Melling to Round 2, with a collection of effective power turns in critical sections of the four-to-six-foot surf.

"Two 6's isn't an amazing heat score but in these conditions it's really hard to surf out there. I felt like I was out of rhythm on every wave, but just luckily I got through them and got 6's. That ended up winning the heat because sometimes it does," explained Reynolds.

Slater kicked off his performance and Jeffreys Bay with a full rotation and an early lead. A few moments later, the Floridian found a quick cover up for another big score, and a ticket to Round 3.

"I feel good and I took a lot of time off this week. I didn't chase that last swell, and I just took some time for myself. I also felt really good in my freesurf yesterday. I just felt really calm, and I watched it a couple hours beforehand to see where to sit and which waves to catch and who's doing what," stated Slater.

C.J. Hobgood won his first heat of 2015. The former world surfing champion defeated Australians Kai Otton and Owen Wright in the dying moments of the heat.

"I just want to surf good and it was kind of a slow heat and Owen has been going hard out there. Owen's surfing is so smooth. His turns look a lot bigger than mine, so I know I have to catch bigger waves than him," concludes Hobgood.
