South African surfing and shaping legend Peter Daniels has passed away at 66.

Daniels, who has shaped nearly roughly 40,000 surfboards, won national titles and competed in the World Tour. Peter worked with the planet's best surfers - Tom Curren, Kelly Slater, Sunny Garcia, Andy Irons, Joel Parkinson, Aritz Aranburu, Jordy Smith and many other rode his boards.

In the past 20 years, the South African icon worked with Pukas, the Spanish surfboard company. Peter Daniels was born in Durban, in 1949. He lived an intense life.

"So sorry to hear about the passing of the legendary Peter Daniels. We enjoyed some long walls together at Bay of Plenty and J-Bay. I'm sure he's on one of those long walls right now, speeding through time and space," expressed Shaun and Carla Tomson.

Pukas called him the "John Wayne of the shaping room." The brand underlines his energy and attitude while working in Oiartzun, in the Basque Country. He is known for harmonious and elegant lines, as well as curves inspired by the female body. "A shape/surfboard has to be sexy," he once said.

"Back in the days, Peter developed the SL Bonzer bottom with Kelly Slater, a very peculiar bottom used for our best seller 'Pukas LaLola', and it's due to the shaper-surfer-shaper relationship that Peter has with Zuccho that came up with the 'Pukas Fang', an all time best seller at Pukas."
