There's a new surf documentary about West Africa. "Beyond" is a three-month long discovery through Morocco, Mauritania, Senegal and Gambia.

Mario Hainzl made his debut as film director with the award-winning masterpiece "The Old, the Young & the Sea," an inspiring journey along the Atlantic coast of France, Spain and Portugal.

Now, he believes lineups are getting crowded because surfers have never really dared to travel. Discovering Africa is diving into a magical arena of empty peaks and perfect peeling wave spots.

"Africa, despite its size, still remains a mystery to many. It seems that a faint barrier prevents us from establishing a close connection with this giant continent and its abundance of cultures. It feels like as if it lies in the past, not in the present," the director writes.

"Through 'Beyond,' we want to immerse ourselves in a region of West Africa to establish a close connection between Africa and Europe, and we’ll do so with a seemingly mundane topic: surfing."

The African surfing adventure included six media professionals. They all captured film clips, sound bites, photographs and written work, as they traveled from Arabic-influenced Morocco to Senegal via Mauritania.

"Beyond" found spots where you must ask permission to surf. Can't believe it's true? You will get a glimpse of Africa's forbidden Atlantic gems when the movie sees the light of day somewhere in 2016.
