Yago Dora: he launched an air assault at the 2017 Surfest

Yago Dora claimed the 2017 Maitland and Port Stephens Toyota Pro, at Merewether Beach, in New South Wales, Australia.

The all-Brazilian final lined Dora up against his fellow countryman Jesse Mendes, but took his time before launching the critical air assault. First with an 8.83, and then with a Perfect 10-point ride.

"I don't think it has really sunk in yet. Having that final with Jesse was funny because the last time we surfed against each other, he smashed me, so it was awesome to get one back on him," revealed Yago Dora.

After taking out the first QS 6,000 of the season, Dora says he's ready to embark on the Championship Tour (CT) marathon.

"I was going to bed early and eating well and taking it all seriously so to see all of that pay off is awesome. The conditions the last few days were perfect for me, which was good."

On the women's side, Johanne Defay opened her account in the final with a 7.50 and later backed it up with a solid 9.23 wave. Her opponent, Paige Hareb was not able to find the high score she needed, and Defay won the Anditi Women's Pro.

"The waves were super tricky today, so I had to be really onto where the waves were. I have never won a QS event before so to win the first one of the season is amazing," added Defay.

"I have had a few close calls with re-qualifying in the past, so this result will mean I can relax a little. I feel really comfortable in Newcastle and always enjoy it, now it is even more special to me."
