Frederico Morais: he defeated John John Florence twice at J-Bay | Photo: Tostee/WSL

The fans and the competitors won't forget this day at J-Bay. It was pro surfing at its best.

The South African point break delivered flawless six-to-eight-foot waves, and the athletes answered accordingly. The day kicked off with pure magic.

When Filipe Toledo gained speed and launched into a magnificent air reverse, everybody knew this day would be a special one. The judges had no doubts - Perfect 10.

"The wind is really good for airs right now. It's hard to surf when the wind is like this so I decided to go to the air and it worked really good," said Toledo.

But Frederico Morais and John John Florence had more for us, a few minutes after a shark spotting. In the quarterfinal clash, the duo unleashed their power surfing skills and constantly changed positions on the leaderboard.

However, and with a few minutes on the clock, the Portuguese surfer found two gems that took him out of a combination situation and turned the heat. As a result, Morais earned his first Perfect 10, and a spot in the semifinal.

"I love a good challenge, and this heat was a big, big challenge, and I loved it. Honestly, I hate sharks, we don't worry about that in Portugal, so I'm not used to it, but we were safe, so we surfed, and it was fine," expressed Morais.

"When you're focused on the heat you forget all about that. It's my first 10-point ride on the Championship Tour and, on a day like this and against John, it is emotional."
