Ocean: an endless wave riding playground

Surfers, kitesurfers, windsurfers and bodyboarders are Men and Women of challenges. The wave riders are always looking for new wave spots, unexplored coast lines, speed records, jump records and technological advances.

In 2011, there are several challenges to be conquered and completed. SurferToday.com has had a brainstorm session and brings you some ideas to be developed in the next year:

1. Artificial wave pools: there are several surf parks in the world, but perfection is still very far away. Surfers want long wave lines, size and a superior riding experience. Kelly Slater has started his Wave Company and may give a boost to this longtime dream.

2. Three wave sports in the 2016 Summer Olympic Games: surfing is almost there but should make the last minute effort; windsurfing and kiteboarding should not compete for one place, but instead lobby for a double class ticket in Rio de Janeiro.

3. Considerable safety improvements in kiteboarding: a large number of kitesurfers have lost their lives in 2010 while enjoying the sport. Many others suffered severe injuries and will not ride again. Let's work for a serious gear upgrade.

4. GPS surfing contest: technology is all around, but we are missing a few challenging alternatives. Who's the fastest surfer? Who can fly higher in an aerial move? Windsurfers and kitesurfers are already testing it, but let's try it with the surfers and bodyboarders.

5. Kite crossing the Atlantic Ocean: the windsurfers have done it, a kite ship has done it but we are still waiting for the kiteboarders to complete it.
