2008 Alan Atkins Award

Coolangatta’s Garry Davies was awarded the 2008 Alan Atkins award as part of the Diploma of Sport Management (Surfing Studies) course at Southern Cross University’s Tweed Gold Coast campus recently.

The award is for the best surf business plan presentation by students undertaking the Sport Business (Surfing) subject as part of the Diploma

“There were some very interesting business concepts presented with Garry’s plan for a surf photography business impressing the judges,” said course coordinator Jak Carroll.

“Not only was Garry’s concept slightly different but his research and planning clearly demonstrated the viability of the business.”

The business plan presentations are the culmination of a year of study for those undertaking the Diploma.

“This is a project where students bring together all the business, research and marketing knowledge they have gained throughout the course,” said Carroll.

Alan Atkins, who the award honours, was a driving force in establishing the Surfing Studies Diploma.

A former CEO of Surfing Australia, Atkins is currently the Vice-President of the International Surfing Association.

August 3, 2016, was a day that surfers should never forget. For the first time in its long history, surfing was confirmed in the Olympic Games.
