Quiksilver Pro New York: even the Australians loved it

The waves were great, the beach was packed, the surfing show was intense and the surrounding atmosphere was super cosmopolitan. That's right, the 2012 Quiksilver Pro New York has been cancelled.

In a vague release, the Association of Surfing Professionals and the surf brand announce that the Quiksilver Pro New York will not return to the East Coast of the United States as a stop on the 2012 ASP World Title Series.

"The 2011 Quiksilver Pro New York event was a huge success for the surfers and fans with great conditions and incredible support from New Yorkers" says Rob Colby, president of Quiksilver Americas. It's almost like an antithesis, but no more reasons were given.

"The 2011 installment was a fantastic event with excellent waves, tremendous local support and some of the best surfing we enjoyed all season. That said, we understand the factors leading to Quiksilver's withdrawal of the New York event from the 2012 schedule", completes the ASP Media Director Dave Prodan, in a statement.

The effects of the 2008 recession and the need to cut budgets are one of the possibilities. Also, Long Beach locals believe that the relation with the authorities was not the best one. Apparently, Quiksilver wanted to have a skate park jam run at night, a decision that has been halted by the City officials.

New York is out of the world pro surfing circuit. The only remaining urban surf contests will be San Francisco and Rio de Janeiro. The city that never sleeps deserved a better luck.
