San Diego Surf Dog Competition: riding a wave for the Guinness World Records

Abbie Girl and Ricochet are the winners of the 7th annual Loews Coronado Bay Resort Surf Dog Competition, held in the sands of San Diego.

More than 50 dogs participated in a unique Southern California surf competition, in which K9 specialists compete in 10-minute heats along with their best human friends.

The surf dog competition allowed three divisions: small dogs, large dogs and tandem dogs. The famous Ricochet won the big category and placed second in the tandem showdown.

Abbie Girl, an Australian Kelpie, returned with Michael Uy to defend last year's title and was successful again. Watch the highlights of the San Diego surf dog competition.

"You know, actually this year I was injured so, a little bit of an underdog coming in, but we do this because we love surfing together in the water. So, it's kind of amazing how all of this has come about, we are very honored," said Uy.

The 2012 Loews Coronado Bay Resort Surf Dog Competition also beat a record. There were between 12-to-17 surf dogs riding a wave in a single giant surfboard.

After delivering the winning snacks to the best surf dogs in the world, all profits raised in the event were channeled to animal charity.
