Maya Gabeira: big wave surfing at Praia do Norte, Nazaré

Maya Gabeira has opened the Billabong XXL season with big bomb ridden in the infamous Praia do Norte, in Nazaré, Portugal.

The world capital of big wave surfing has been attracting the best water mountain riders on planet Earth. And when the Portuguese North Canyon decides to start the engines, the show is on.

Brazilian big wave charger Maya Gabeira never refuses a good vertical descent. Garrett McNamara made the call and she flew to the spot of the crime to collect the first Billabong XXL entry.

Alongside with Carlos Burle, Pedro Scooby and Felipe Cesarano, Gabeira picked the right wave to open the hostilities in the big wave surf season.

"I had to go through huge bumps and had to hold because I didn't want to fall", says Maya Gabeira, who won the Billabong XXL Awards in 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2012.
