Gabriel Medina: he is not tired of so many aerials

Gabriel Medina has set fire to the 2012 US Open of Surfing with a blazing performance at Huntington Beach.

The Brazilian game boy made his technical airskills appear effortless to notch a 9.07 on the way to a 17.97 out of 20.00 heat total to advance to the Round of 24.

"That was definitely a tough heat because it was kind of slow and I just tried to find the big sets and do my airs," Medina said. "US Open is a big event and everyone wants this title. I know everyone is going to fight for it and I really hope I can win this year."

Patrick Gudauskas dispatched Julian Wilson, Alejo Muniz and Joel Parkinson with surgical power-turns to net the day’s high single-wave score of 9.17 amidst his winning performance.

The 2012 US Open of Surfing, surfed in one-to-three foot (0.5 meter) waves, saw Courtney Conlogue winning two heats.

The talented natural-footer started strong with a Round 2 victory and advanced directly through to the Quarterfinals in dominant fashion while amassing the event’s highest scores.

Meanwhile, Taranaki surfer Paige Hareb has qualified for the 2013 ASP World Tour overnight, after progressing through to the third round of the Nike US Open of Surfing and ensuring a fourth straight year at the elite level of women's surfing.
