Anthony Walsh has taken out the 2020 Perfect Chapter at Carcavelos Beach, in Cascais, Portugal.

The tube riding contest kicked off with offshore wind, and clean and hollow five-to-seven-foot barrels peeling across the beach break.

The firing conditions continued throughout the day with all 16 surfers finding and scoring beautiful gems.

The Hawaiian surfer, who received a last-minute invitation to replace defending champion William Aliotti, became the fourth alternate to win the contest.

In the final, Anthony Walsh scored two-wave total of 8.60 points, leaving former Perfect Chapter champion Nic von Rupp in second place with a combined score of 5.80 points.

Aritz Aranburu, from the Basque Country, was third, and American East Coast athlete Balaram Stack finished fourth.

"I'm really happy with this win. It is so unexpected. I wasn't even in the contest. I got the call last minute as someone was injured," explained Walsh.

"I traveled for 30 hours, got here yesterday, surfed once, and ended up winning, so it's an amazing feeling."

Three Extra Trophies

Aranburu won both the "Best Tube" and "Best Score" awards.

Nic von Rupp, besides being the best-placed Portuguese surfer, also secured the Ricardo dos Santos Attitude Award.

"Ricardo was a great friend and a great surfer. We all learned a lot from him in this kind of waves, so this trophy will have a special place in my home", said the surfer from Praia Grande, Sintra.

Portuguese junior champion, Martim Carrasco, won the New Generation category, and a trip to the Hidden Bay Resort, in the Mentawai Islands.

"It was another Perfect Chapter of Portuguese surfing, with perfect and challenging waves all day long, an amazing level from all surfers, and a great crowd on the beach," Rui Costa, organizer of the Perfect Chapter.

"This is the kind of contest that both fans and surfers seek - perfect waves punctuated by the uncertainty outcome of each barrel. Cascais and Portugal showed once again that they have the best natural stadiums for our sport."
