The Bay of Plenty Surf Team claimed their third consecutive National Scholastic Surfing Championship, at Fitzroy Beach, New Zealand.

With seven of their twelve surfers in the finals, The Bay of Plenty Surf Team claimed two division titles: Under 18 Boys and Under 16 Girls.

"Being in my last year of the Scholastics, it is pretty cool to win another title and to go three wins in a row with our team," underlined Jordan Griffin, who won the Under 18 Boys title.

Griffin won by way of a late flurry of waves and holding off Canterbury's Harrison Whiteside who came 0.10 points off a win on his last wave as the hooter sounded.

"I tripped up before I even got to the water, so I had a blowout before it even started. It was difficult, really hard, messy conditions, I was sitting on the lefts and then paddled over to the right and got those two waves in the end."

Despite being diagnosed with glandular fever a year ago, Gisborne's Dayna Story recovered from a long period without surfing to claim the Under 18 Girls division.

"I am pretty stoked, I didn’t expect this at all, I just came here to have some fun because I am not 100% still but am going stir crazy at home," expressed Story, who came to the beach after the final thinking she had not done enough to win the final.
