Padang Padang: expect bigger waves

The 2011 Rip Curl Cup Invitational at Padang Padang may get the green light in the next days. Surf forecasters are tracking a potential swell for the first days of August.

"Initially, it had looked too far south to mention but the latest numbers have it in at 214 degrees and 10ft at 16 seconds which will certainly make it a contender for competition conditions", say the forecasters.

"Another probably smaller system follows from a similar position and then there's still suggestion of a large storm south of Africa that looks not to send the bulk of it's energy to Indo but is none the less something to keep a close eye on."

It's on when it's on and the 32 invited surfers – 16 of Indonesia’s best and 16 of the world’s top tube riders – are either already standing by on Bali’s Bukit Peninsula, or en route to the island.

The first riders to hit the waters of Indonesia will be Mikala Jones, Luke Stedman, Putra Hermawan and Made "Bol" Adi Putra. The waiting period of the 2011 Rip Curl Cup Invitational at Padang Padang closes on the 14th August.

When contest directors see an ideal "Padang swell" in the forecast, they will give the green light and the 32 competitors will have 24 hours to make it to contest site.
