Cody comes out on top in Jacksonville's annual nighttime pro surf competition.

Red Bull Night Riders has become one of the top annual surf contests on the East Coast, drawing highly accomplished pros every year to compete.

The tow-at competition featured six surfers squaring off in the night skies, all attempting to pull off the best big air trick.

Local star Cody Thompson owned the night and took home his third Red Bull Night Riders trophy.

The event took place at Mayport Poles, one of the city's best breaks, where the surfers were without the typical crowd of thousands cheering them on.

The rules remained the same. Each surfer was given 15 minutes to pull off their best aerial - the best score wins.

Undeterred by the lack of spectators, the field did not disappoint and was able to compete at the high standards that have been set by past editions, which have been in North Florida since 2010.

This year's lineup also included Cody's brother Evan, last year's winner Balaram Stack, Eric Geiselman, Robbie McCormick, and the legendary Cory Lopez.

A Special Event for Jacksonville

After his victory, Cody reflected on coming out on top of such a stacked field.

"This was probably the toughest field we've ever had at the event. Everyone was more than capable, and it made for some great action. It was fun to watch everyone out there," said Cody Thompson.

Cody proved most capable, with the top aerial in his heat scoring a 7.5, which was enough for the victory.

He narrowly edged Eric Geiselman and his score of 7.17.

Evan Thompson rounded out the top three, solidifying a great day for the Thompson family and the Jacksonville surf scene.

As a born and bred Jacksonville native, it means a lot for Cody to win and for the event to continue this year.

"This is a huge event for everyone, one of the biggest events in general in Jacksonville and definitely the biggest surf event," continued the champion.

"For Red Bull to hold this every year in Jacksonville out of anywhere in the world means a lot to the local surfers, and even those who don't surf who just appreciate the competition."

Surfers were judged by a panel of their peers, including Florida surf legend and former surfing world champion CJ Hobgood, and Red Bull Night Riders veterans Asher Nolan and Blake Jones.

This year's winner collected a prize purse of $5,000 and an automatic entry for next year's Red Bull Night Riders.
