Punta de Lobos: rocky surfing experience

Fernando Zegers has taken out the Quiksilver Ceremonial Chile Trials 2013, at Punta de Lobos.

Zegers conquered the first ticket to the main event of the Chilean big wave surfing contest, after winning the Trials, in 18-20 foot wave conditions.

The left hand point break hosted a field of 24 surfers all battling it out to join the best big wave riders in the world. The Quiksilver Ceremonial Chile is the first stop of the 2013/14 Big Wave World Tour.

After some crazy wipeouts and epic rides, four surfers secured a place in the main event. Camilo Hernández, Morris Tapia and Ismael Herrero will join Fernando Zegers, when the contest gets green light, between April 15th and June 15th.

"The big swells in the Northern Hemisphere stop with the end of winter. Fortunately, at the same time, they are just getting started in the Southern Hemisphere as their winter begins", explains Gary Linden, Big Wave World Tour director.

"The Quiksilver Ceremonial Chile opens its waiting period just as the South Pacific begins to work its magic and the surfers focus on a new set of weather patterns. The endless winter, a big wave surfer's dream!", he adds.

Past winners of the event include Marcos Monteiro (2011), Christian Merello (2010) and Grant "Twiggy" Baker (2009). In 2012, there was no winner because the event did not run due to lack of contestable waves.
