2009 British Senior Championships

The BSA have given the go-ahead for the 2009 British Open Surf Championships sponsored by VW and in association with Quiksilver and Fistral Blu Bar.

This weekend (19th & 20th Sept) will see surfers from across the country converging on Fistral Beach, Newquay, for the opportunity to fight it out for the most prestigious title in the land. Last year surfers made the most of solid 6ft waves in one of the most prestigious contests on British soil.

The 2008 British Open saw some of the best conditions ever witnessed for a contest on British shores with Russell Winter and Joanne Dennison making the most of the waves to ride all the way to the top spots on the podium. WQS surfer Winter celebrated his first British Open Champion title in over 15 years as well as the senior’s top podium placing.

The action was explosive with the likes of Russell Winter pulling out big air reverses while defending senior champion Ben Baird turned on the power with huge, gouging power carves. Cullum Murrell took the Masters title with  his aggressive back hand attack.

In the Veterans category, defending champion and local legend, Jed Stone claimed his 9th Veteran title. Surfers and spectators alike can look forward to a major weekend on the beach considered by many to be the ‘home’ of British Surfing.

Contest Director Joanne Hillman says, “We have a good entry this year with most of the top British surfers up for the challenge. With 3-4ft surf we should see some impressive surfing. Everyone involved is looking forward to Saturday morning when the action will all kick off!”
