John John Florence and Lakey Peterson have taken out the 2019 Margaret River Pro, in Western Australia.

The finals day got underway at Main Break with highly contestable six-to-eight foot waves.

The Hawaiian surfer defeated Kolohe Andino in a high-scoring final.

Florence won his second event of the season, the third trophy in Western Australia, and the seventh Championship Tour (CT) event of his career.

The contest was decided in the dying minutes when John John used priority to lock in a near-perfect score of 9.50 points.

"Brother [Kolohe] was pushing me super hard in that heat, and it was pretty nerve-racking in those last 12 minutes. I knew I had to choose the perfect wave. Kolohe is scary to surf against in these waves," said John John Florence.

"I love coming here. It reminds me of home in Hawaii. There are so many different waves with lots of power. It's just a beautiful place to come."

On the women's event, Lakey Peterson defeated Tatiana Weston-Webb and secured her first victory in Western Australia and the fourth CT event of her career.

"It was super windy, which made it tricky, but that's all part of this place, and it makes the win even sweeter," added Peterson.

The 2019 Championship Tour rankings will not only crown this year's world champions but will also determine the first 18 qualifiers into the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

"After a rough start, the Olympic qualification has definitely been on my mind. I need to have fun and enjoy myself because if I get too caught up in past results, it can hinder me a bit."

The next stop on the Championship Tour season schedule is the Oi Rio Pro. The competition kicks off at Saquarema, Brazil, on June 20.
