Three-to-five foot (1 - 1.5 metre) waves greeted surfers, as they entered Round 2 of competition at the Oakley Lowers Pro 2015.

In the last heat of Round 1, Kelly Slater showed that being 43 is an advantage in a wave like Lower Trestles. The Floridian showed his natural commitment and moved through to Round 2, behind an in-form Ryan Callinan.

"My first event here at Lower Trestles, the waves were perfect. It was my second week of my senior year of high school, and it was a perfect week for me. I had a lot of fun. Things have changed a lot since then, but this is a special place," said Slater.

Filipe Toledo continued his own business with his efficient backhand approach, punctuated by impossible full-rotation aerials and savvy wave face management.

"The waves are so fun and I was freaking out and frothing to get out there and do my best. I maybe made a couple of mistakes at the start but settled into a rhythm soon. It's a great vibe down here with my family and friends. The waves are fun and it's a great place to get ready for Rio," added Toledo.

Local San Clemente superstar Kolohe Andino is out of the equation because Wade Carmichael used both his forehand and backhand to smash the American's hopes. Carmichael stole the day's high heat total with an outstanding 18.40.

"It's been a great trip to Southern California so far. I've been surfing a lot and have some good boards under my feet, so I feel confident and ready. Lots of lefts leading up to that heat so I grabbed one earlier on but was fortunate to get a great righthander towards the end of the heat," concluded Wade.
