Smith, Toledo, Gudauskas and Ribeiro. Four surfers have secured their spots in the quarterfinals of the 2016 Hurley Pro at Trestles.

After an intense marathon of surfing, the competition landed in Round 4. But the previous round brought a few shocking surprises. Brett Simpson, a former Championship Tour (CT) surfer defeated John John Florence and reshuffled the world title race.

"Every time you surf against John and those top guys, all you're thinking is 'I hope I don't get blown out of the water because they're so capable.' I'm obviously happy; I could've used that while I was on Tour but the pressure's off," said Simpson.

Unlike Brett, who will have to surf a Round 5 heat, Filipe Toledo earned himself a ticket to the finals. The Brazilian collected the highest two-wave total of the day using his aerial tools.

Jordy Smith had one of his best heats of the year. The South African looked sharp and focused and sent Kelly Slater and Michel Bourez to the second repechage round. But to get through to Round 4, Smith had to beat Kai Otton in a very tight matchup.

"This morning's heat wasn't my best, and I narrowly scraped through. My first wave was a good one, but I kept turning a little too hard and went out the back, so I'm super lucky that one went my way. I had to play some strategic moves at the end, but was good to get the job done," explained Smith.

Alex Ribeiro won't forget Lower Trestles. The Brazilian rookie eliminated Adrian Buchan in Round 3 and won his Round 4 clash against Jadson Andre and Josh Kerr. It is already a dream run for Ribeiro.

"I kept my focus and just believed in my surfing. It's amazing to be into the Quarterfinals, and this is everything I've been working toward, so I'm really excited. The wave here looks like my home spot," concluded Ribeiro.
