Jordy Smith claimed the 2016 Hurley Pro at Trestles, in California. The South African defeated Joel Parkinson in three-foot surf at Lower Trestles.

Smith opened his wave account with two average rides, and Joel seemed focused on waiting for a set wave which could offer a long, rippable wall.

The South African's third wave earned 8 points from the judges, and the fourth was scored 7.40 points. When Parkinson kicked off his campaign, he failed to land a small air and only got a 6.93.

In the last ten minutes, Jordy Smith controlled the priorities and the opportunities, and even improved his backup wave before celebrating his first event win of the season.

"I've had a really good board beneath my feet. I came into this event with an open mind. I've watched Joel throughout my career he's one of my favorite surfers of all time. It's also has been a sad event after losing 'Woody' [David Wood, Head of WSL Security]. I'd like to dedicate this event to him," said Smith.

"I'm frothing and I'm over the moon. If I can be in with a shot at the world title this year then that will be great. Europe can go either way so I'm just going to try my hardest and see how it goes."

On the Swatch Women's Pro final, Tyler Wright and Stephanie Gilmore put out a great show, and the winner was only revealed after the horn sounded. Wright won her fourth event of the season.

"I set out with a goal this year and that's to win every heat and win every final and I'll go into the next events with that same goal and that same attitude. I've put a lot of work in and have probably the best team in the world right now,"expressed Tyler Wright.

"I've been in World Title races before but it feels so much different. I feel so much more comfortable and confident. It's just flowing for me and I just feel good. I've got so much love behind me."
