Kelly Slater: new school, old teachers

The Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Specialty-Rated Boost Mobile SurfSho presented by Samsung was off to a flying start today with world class surfers Kelly Slater, Taj Burrow, Owen Wright and Jordy Smith hitting Bondi's famous waves this morning.

The surfers provided a taste of the aerial action to come over the three-day event, the first international surf competition Bondi has seen in more than 20 years. Champion boxer Danny Green joined Kelly and others at the launch as he prepares to take them on in Saturday's celebrity surfing challenge.

Today's junior trials saw 32 young surfers competing in four-person heats for a chance to win wildcard entry into Sunday's final.

The winner of the junior trials, 19 year-old Nick McDonald from Caloundra, Queensland will now compete against Kelly Slater, Taj Burrow and other pros and finalists in Sunday's main event. He also takes home $1000 cash and $2000 worth of Samsung products. Daniel Karren from Sydney's northern beaches was also granted entry into Sunday's Final.

The Boost Mobile SurfSho will continue over the weekend with the most exciting aerial surfers from across the globe competing on Bondi's famous waves. Alongside the spectacular surfing action, the Boost Mobile SurfSho will feature a live concert on both days with The Beautiful Girls headlining from 4pm Saturday afternoon.

Tomorrow's program will feature open trials throughout the day. Don't miss the Celebrity Surfing Challenge at 12pm with Danny Green, Bondi Vet, Jason Dundas, Mike Whitney and more competing with the pro-surfers for the chance to win $5,000 for charity.
