Lucca Mesinas Novaro and Leilani McGonagle claimed the 2018 Barbados Surf Pro, at Drill Hall Beach.

The Peruvian surfer was able to defeat Brazilian powerhouse Alex Ribeiro in two-to-three-foot tropical surf.

Despite the tricky conditions, Mesinas, nicknamed "The Silent Assassin," found the best waves and smashed his opponent with a two-wave score of 17.57 points.

With eight minutes on the clock, Ribeiro struggled to unlock the combination situation, and Mesinas ended up claiming the QS 3,000 event.

"It means a lot to win my first QS. I've been working hard and training to get a win and now I have," said Lucca Mesinas.

"I was super focused on this wave and felt like I had a good chance to do well here because my home break in Peru is very similar."

On the women's event, Lelani McGonagle beat Summer Macedo by a narrow margin in a low-scoring final.

"I feel like I need to pinch myself. I really can't believe it. Ever since I arrived in Barbados this year, I just wanted to win for Zander Venezia," said an emotional McGonagle.

“Last year at this event, we had become really close and it was emotional for me to come back for the first time since he passed. He is someone I carry really deeply in my heart and when he passed away I wanted to win this event for him."
