Matt Banting: victories are in the details

Matt Banting has conquered the Burton Toyota Pro 2014, in Newcastle, Australia. Malia Manuel claimed the Hunter Ports Women's Classic.

With high flying heats, perfect 10-point-rides and last minute heroics, the ASP 6-Star event closed in spectacular form.

In the final of the Burton Toyota Pro 2014, the surfer from Port Macquarie defeated Nathan Hedge. Combining razor sharp snaps with inverted aerials, Banting won the decisive heat with a total combined score of 18.36 points.

"I won a 6-Star when I was 17 years-old and haven't won one since, and I've been really hungry to get another win, I got third at the US Open last year, but this feels way better," tells Matt Banting.

"This is the closest thing I have to a hometown event. It's great to travel a couple hours down the road and compete in a world-class event."

In the Women's competition, Malia Manuel defeated fellow Hawaiian Alessa Quizon in the final. Manuel has been the standout surfer for the entire week in the Hunter Ports Women's Classic, pushing her turns harder than the rest.

"I'm really happy to be back in Newcastle. I got second the last time I was here, so I know how it feels to be the bridesmaid, and it feels really good to step up," added Malia.

The Burton Toyota Pro and the Hunter Ports Women's Classic are part of the Surfest Newcastle Australia.
