Mitch Parkinson: a bright future ahead

Mitch Parkinson has taken the Gold Coast leg of the 2010 Rip Curl GromSearch. The surfer from Coolangatta registered a combined two-wave heat total of 15.44 in the final, toppling fellow Cooly-Kid Noa Deane by less than one point, with Tommy Boucaut and Will Morrison (Currumbin, Qld – 10.96) finishing third and fourth respectively.

Parkinson’s victory secures himself a place in tomorrow’s national Rip Curl GromSearch final, which will see today’s 16 and Under division champions take on the nation’s best surfers from the other five events from the national series.

Not all is lost for Noa Deane though, with the progressive competitor topping the overall Rip Curl GromSearch series ratings and booking himself the final spot in tomorrow’s 16 and Under division National Final.

Meanwhile Ellie-Jean Coffey (Crescent Head, NSW) matched Parkinson today, claiming the blue ribbon 16 and Under Girls division.

Coffey registered a combined two-wave heat total of 14.76 (out of a possible 20), out pointing Letarcia Hurt (Kingscliff, NSW – 11.57), with Audrey Styman-Lane (Avalon, NSW – 11.10) and Matilda McLellan (Point Leo, Vic - 7.54) finishing third and fourth respectively.

Male and female champions from Thursday’s (December 16, 2010) national finals will be invited to represent Australia in the international final, held during the Rip Curl Pro at Bells Beach over Easter.
