After six consecutive lay days, the 2015 Hawaiian Pro kicked off in Haleiwa, on the North Shore of Oahu.

The man of the day was Frederico Morais. The Portuguese surfer collected the highest heat total of Round 1 (17.96 points) and advanced through to the next phase alongside Billy Kemper.

"I love these waves; these powerful waves where you can really do power turns and bottom-to-top surfing. That's what I'm looking for, and that's what I've been working on," said Morais.

Local veteran Sunny Garcia has reasons to be happy, too. The man who won the Triple Crown of Surfing six times matched Derek Ho's record of 29 seasons competing in the prestigious Hawaiian contest. And he will be in Round 2.

"It's the cherry on the top of the pie for me. It's not like competing, but just the feeling of being home. I love the Triple Crown. I love that Randy Rarick built something that Hawaiian surfers can enjoy at home and make a living competing in their own events, added Garcia.

Leonardo Fioravanti couldn't have had a better comeback after the injury suffered during the Volcom Pipe Pro. The Italian prodigy won his Round 1 heat in grand style.

"It's been a super tough year for me, up and down, full of rollercoaster. At the start of the year, I fractured my vertebrae at Pipeline at the Volcom Pipe Pro, and that put me out for about six months. I just worked hard; I worked eight hours a day doing anything possible to get back," explained Fioravanti.

Kalani David managed to beat tough opponents on the opening day of competition at the 2015 Hawaiian Pro. The North Shore charger defeated Tim Reyes, Nomme Mignot, and former Triple Crown champion Myles Padaca, and he advances on to Round 2.

"I've just been working so much on rail to rail, and carves and turns and more all around surfing. But if it gets small and I need to do an air, I'll be able to pull it out. I have a couple magic boards, and I'm stoked," concluded David.
