Huntington Beach: riots broke after the US Open of Surfing 2013

A riot broke out in Huntington Beach, California, after the US Open of Surfing 2013 final.

A fight in the crowd ended up in a large scale riot, with hundreds of people destroying street signs, newspaper racks, portable toilets, city vehicles and local shops.

Helmeted police was forced to intervene and fired pepper-spray pellets. Fortunately, there were no injuries to report.

"We're extremely disappointed and saddened by the disturbance that occurred up on Main Street after the close of the US Open of Surfing. We work tirelessly with City staff, police, fire and other agencies to ensure a safe environment for all", the organization of the event declared.

The Huntington Beach Police Department has confirmed eight arrests, but authorities are still reviewing video and could make more arrests.

The US Open of Surfing 2013 was conquered by Alejo Muniz.
