Damien Hobgood has been getting barreled with sardines, at Supertubos, Peniche. The iconic fish of the Rip Curl Pro Portugal 2012 dropped in to say hello.
Sardines, also known as pilchards, are oily fishes that can be grilled or served in cans. This is a fish that is commonly found in the Portuguese waters, but we didn't know that they surfed waves.
In the tubular wave of Supertubos, near the fishing village of Peniche, sardines are dropping in to mess the pro surfers' contest performance. Damien Hobgood was the first victim, although he managed to keep the focus.
Sardines are also a natural source of Omega 3 acids, which reduce the occurrence of cardiovascular disease. The historic Portuguese canning industry sees sardines as opportunities.
