Soöruz announced the launch of the world's first oyster powder-based wetsuit.
The French surf company founded in 1999 created Green Line, a wetsuit that mixes oyster powder, natural rubber, sugar cane, and softener oil.
"The oyster shell quickly got our attention as a natural recycled substitute, and it will become a renewable alternative to the limestone," Soöruz explains.
In early 2018, Soöruz started an R&D program to develop new wetsuits from renewable and/or recycled materials.
They believe oyster powder could be a better and more efficient alternative to limestone-based wetsuits.
The Recipe
Soöruz used oyster shells in its different production units to test their interaction with different substances.
In mid-2019, the Biöprene recipe became a reality, and the first wetsuits were ready to be assembled.
During the fall, the company made intensive tests to finalize the new Green Line range, which includes 4/3, 3/2, and 2/2 chest zip wetsuits.
By the end of 2020, there will also be a women's 5/4/3 mm full suit.
Soöruz has been searching for alternatives to petrol-based wetsuits since 2015 with the goal of delivering sustainable and environment-friendly products.
The Green Line features fully taped inside seams, outside recycled nylon and polyester fabric, Storm Dry technology on the back and front, water-based prints, and knee reinforcements.
