Grandmasters of surf: knowledge is everything

With the grandmasters of surf preparing to dust off their boards and tune their competitive minds, the inaugural Tradies Ocean and Earth Surfmasters is set to arrive at North Cronulla next month.

Seeing the usual crew of weather beaten, salt encrusted, sand blasted, elder statesmen and women competing for ten prestigious titles, the Tradies Ocean and Earth Surfmasters will take place on Sunday, May 16 2010.

With their competitive drive still as sharp as ever, what will transpire will be of the highest order.

“The standard of surfing will be through the roof with several former Australian Champions on show,” said Brad Whittaker, Sutherland Shire Council’s Beach Manager.

“This event also marks a rare competitive opportunity for men and women over 45 years of age,” he said.

Recognising their love and passion for surfing in a format usually celebrated by the younger generation, the event will see competitors competing in the Over 45, 50, 55 and 60 years Men and Women’s divisions.

“The event is designed to encourage those more mature in age to keep challenging themselves, stay fit and develop interests and social networks, particularly in Sutherland Shire,” Whittaker continued.

With this in mind, the event transcends the boundaries of a traditional surfing competition with a range of free community based activities, including live music, fitness activities and displays taking place in Dunningham Park.

Also taking centre stage will be an amazing collection of surf art and photography, and surf education courses.
