SurfAid Cup Newcastle raised $40,000

The Newcastle City Council Boardriders have conquered the SurfAid Cup Newcastle for the second consecutive year, in pumping four-to-five foot waves at Merewether Beach, New South Wales, Australia.

A total of 14 corporate surfing teams raised $40,000 for mother and child programs in remote areas of Indonesia, in Nias, Mentawai islands, Sumbawa and Sumba.

KCE (Chris Cashman, Troy Gould, Joe Myson and Paul Van der Velde) who won the fundraising trophy, after collecting $6,489 for SurfAid.

"SurfAid works in places where hardly anyone but surfers go, but where there are high rates of infant and maternal mortality. Days like today show that surfers can make a real difference and give back to the places they love," underlines Andrew Judge, CEO at SurfAid.

The final of the SurfAid Cup Newcastle 2015 was decided in the last wave, with the Council Boardriders narrowly edging out KCE (57.40) with a final score of 60.17. The Sandbah Surf team, who had been smashing it all day, placed third (53.90) with the Hunter Business Boardriders team rounding out the final in fourth (48.63).

The Newcastle CC Boardriders team members were Dwayne Jefferson, Daniel Masson, Mick Body and Jed Cook, and they selected Jarrod Morrell, Coffs Harbour local legend, as their pro surfer in the five-man tag team.
