A surfer has drowned on the New South Wales central coast, in Australia.

Stuart Harvey, from the Surf Life Saving Central Coast, said the man had either hit a rock shelf or a sand bar.

NSW lifesavers pulled the man, 40, from the surf at The Entrance.

The Ambulance Services said lifeguards conducted CPR on the man before transferring him to a nearby park where an ambulance helicopter with a doctor was waiting.

Lifesavers involved were a bit distressed. All beachgoers should make sure they check the beach signs that provide information on conditions.

Surfers should wear helmets near reef or rocky surf points. Gosford city is on the Brisbane Water, nearby the Brisbane Water National Park. uses cookies to ensure you get the best experience on our website. Learn more on our About section.
