The family of Eddie Aikau confirmed that the event in memory of the legendary surfer and lifeguard will run even without a major sponsor.
"The Eddie: In Memory of Eddie Aikau" is the new name chosen for the big wave surfing contest held annually at Waimea Bay on the North Shore of Oahu, Hawaii.
The Eddie Aikau Foundation announced the new era during the debut of the event's official poster.
And, for the first time in three decades, the contest will not be sponsored by Quiksilver because an agreement was not reached.
"I've always wanted the event to be called 'The Eddie.' The portrait is unbelievable, and the family is just thrilled. I do want to thank Quiksilver for all the years. The family is now moving on," explained Eddie's brother, Clyde Aikau.
The traditional opening ceremony of "The Eddie" is scheduled for November 30th, and, according to the organizers, prize money is not an issue right now.
"Even if we have to have coconuts for trophies and you come down with a can of sardines, Uncle Clyde will feed you rice, and we'll have the event," concludes Clyde.
"It's just a whole new road and a very exciting road, and the main thing is that the family wants to continue to carry on Eddie's legacy and what he was all about."
In February 2016, John John Florence won the last Quiksilver in Memory of Eddie Aikau, run by the clothing company. The event had historical 45-to-60-foot surf exploding at Waimea Bay.
"The Eddie: In Memory of Eddie Aikau" gets underway whenever waves reach the minimum required of 20 feet. The waiting period spans between December 1, 2017, and February 20, 2018.
