The Surf Riders of Hawaii: the first surf book of all time

The first book in the history of surfing will be auctioned by the Surfing Heritage Vintage Surf Auction, in Costa Mesa, on the 11th May 2013.

"The Surf Riders of Hawaii", by A.R. Gurrey, features unique articles and photos with surfers from Waikiki. The surf book was published in 1914 and showcases relevant information about the sport, between 1910 and 1914.

Experts believe the rarity can reach $40,000 because there may be only six copies of "The Surf Riders of Hawaii" in the world. Each copy was handmade and the book is considered to be the birth of surf literature.

A.R. Gurrey, the surfer who took the pictures and published it, is also considered the "father of surf photography". He was a member of the Hui Nalu Surf Club and friend of Duke Kahanamoku.

"The Surf Riders of Hawaii" includes poetry by Lord Byron. The images in the book are actual silver-processed print paper photographs.
