Tiago Pires: in the hands of the free surfing curse

Tiago Pires is out of the Billabong Pro Rio 2013, in Brazil. The Portuguese Tiger has suffered an injury a few days before the kick off of the event.

It's the curse of the free surfing sessions. The number of surfers that have been suffering injuries before important commitments has been increasing.

John John Florence has already confirmed that he will not be in Rio de Janeiro to defend his 2012 Billabong Pro Rio title. The talented wave rider has withdrawn with an ankle injury sustained on the Gold Coast.

This time, and after an epic session in Portugal, Tiago Pires will not be flying to Brazil and will miss an important stage, in Arpoador/Barra da Tijuca.

"I'm officially out of the Billabong Pro Rio! My knee has been getting better, but unfortunately I'm still not able to surf yet! I'm going to keep working on my rehab to come back stronger than ever", reveals Pires.

Tiago's sixth year in the ASP World Tour started with a 25th on the Gold Coast and a 13th, at Bells Beach. in the opening two events. The powerful natural-footer is expected to resume competition at the Volcom Fiji Pro, in Tavarua/Namotu.
