Vasco Ribeiro and Mahina Maeda have conquered the ASP World Junior Championships 2014, in Ribeira D'Ilhas, Ericeira, in Portugal.

It could've been an all-Portuguese or all-Brazilian final, but the last minutes of the semifinals were critical for both flags. Local hero Tomas Fernandes missed the final by a very narrow margin, but fellow countryman Vasco Ribeiro got a well-deserved revenge against Deivid Silva.

The final was a tense affair. The crowd waved Portuguese flags and cheered for Ribeiro. The Brazilian opened the ultimate clash with a 6.17-point ride, but the Portuguese rapidly answered with an ultra-competent 9.00 score.

Local knowledge was paying off, but Ferreira wanted to spoil the party. Perfect waves kept pumping down the line; Ribeiro showed he wanted to get busy and, with time ticking down, his backup wave got better and better.

Italo Ferreiro never gave up, but Vasco Ribeiro was about to write the most important page in the history of surfing in Portugal, with a second scoring wave of 9.63 points. Surf fans in the beach went mad.

"I have no words to describe this moment, I just want to thank everyone who's been supporting me. It's been a long week, especially today I surfed four times," expressed Ribeiro.

"I think the final was actually the heat I was less pressured, I just wanted to do good and I knew I had to post something big cause Italo is such a great surfer."

Hawaiian sensation Mahina Maeda defeated Tessa Thyssen, from Guadeloupe, in the Women's final. A brilliant performance from the 16-year-old surfer, who proved to be the best all week.

"I can't believe it, I'm so stoked and beyond. Watching Ella win last year, it gave me some confidence and the urge to win. I felt like I had the potential, but came here and surfed it heat by heat. Having everybody out there supporting me was just amazing," concluded Maeda.
