Vasco Ribeiro has conquered the Islas Canarias Santa Pro Junior 2011, at La Cicer, after defeating William Aliotti in a low scoring tactical final.

The Portuguese surfer got the best out of the three-foot waves in a 40-minute decisive heat. Ribeiro opened his account with a solid scoring ride and gained a narrow lead which he built on with a series of rapid fire backhand snaps on a long left to claim a 6.77 out of 10 and the title.

"This is maybe one of the best moments of my life especially one of the best contests I have won so I am really happy right now. William is such a great surfer and to win here has made me so happy", said Ribeiro.

"I saw William was nervous at the start and was catching a lot of waves so I tried to wait for a set and that is what I did. The last five 5 minutes I looked at my watch maybe 100 times but that’s it and it is finished and I am stoked."

Vasco Ribeiro has jumped to the first position on the ASP European Men’s Pro Junior rankings holding a slight lead over Aliotti.

"At this stage it is a good position to be in but there are still some big events coming so I am going to focus on them and see what happens but for sure it is good to be leading when we go to the next Pro Junior in San Sebastian."

Aliotti mixed flowing rail carves and progressive aerial punts during the entire contest to make it into the final and demonstrate the potential he has as one of Europe’s best up-and-comers. In the Final, Aliotti was unable to find any high scoring waves or land any of his now trademark air-reverses.

"I am pleased with making the final here and I tried my best but I couldn’t land any of my maneuvres and I was needing a 6 for a long time to take the lead. Vasco then extended his lead and I was looking for an 8 and in the end the waves didn’t come through and that was it. Maybe next time."

"To be in second on the Pro Junior rankings is a good place to be and I think that for the next events I will continue to keep training and try my best to go one better in the next one."

Frederico Morais (Cascais, PRT) 19, who placed equal third, surfed a great semi-final heat against Aliotti putting lots of pressure on his opponent with his strong backhand attack. Securing several solid scores Morais was off to a flying start and challenged the result to the end.

“I thought I was going to get more scores on my waves but sometimes the scores are not equal for each other so it is a bit hard. I am still happy for this result and next time I am going to try and do better.”

Surfers competing at the Islas Canarias Santa Pro Junior, event nº3 of 7 on the ASP European Pro Junior Series, claimed the valuable ranking points on offer at this 3-Star rated event and now race for the overall European Pro Junior title and the chance to compete in the Asp World Junior Series starting in Bali, Indonesia on October 3, 2011.
