Night surfing: Wavegarden loves it under the stars

Ready to catch waves at midnight? Suffering from insomnia? No problem. The world's first artificial wave pool turned the floodlights on. The night surfing era has just begun.

Wavegarden has teamed up with a range of leading technical suppliers to light up their headquarters in Northern Spain.

The surf pool masters invited three surfers to test a state-of-the-art lighting system. The result is, at least, truly eye-catching.

"Lighting the waves from underneath the water is a new concept and key to Wavegarden’s client proposition. We used software programs to modify the light coverage, intensity, and color. We even managed to install a light on the moving wavefoil to illuminate the wave for the entire length of the lagoon," explains Josema Odriozola, CEO at Wavegarden.

"It was necessary to experiment with the angle and depth of the lights to optimize the reflection inside the wave."

"Although we understand that external lights will be required at commercial facilities, the focus of this research was below the water surface."

The lucky test-drive surfers were Vincent Duvignac, Natxo Gonzalez, Axi Muniain, and Asier Maqueda.

They had the chance to appreciate a new surfing experience under the stars of a warm summer night.

Wavegarden understood that it's difficult for surfers to see the wave formation and water texture clearly, so the artificial wave specialists came up with the idea of strategically placing lights underwater to create the ultimate night surfing arena.
