Tane Wallis: flying away

Tane Wallis and Jasmine Smith have conquered the Aerial7 Backdoor Pro Junior, after eight hours of surfing in tough conditions, at Mount Maunganui's Main Beach, New Zealand.

In wild two-meter waves, Wallis was a standout surfer all day, completing big powerful turns tight in the pocket. The lanky natural footer was basically the surfer who held his composure the best in the challenging conditions.

"It was pretty hard out there in the final and congrats to everyone who surfed today, the conditions took their toll for sure and for me in the fourth and final heat of the day, fatigue was definitely a factor and I think that showed in the amount of times I fell", said Tane Wallis.

Despite several falls in the final, Wallis finished with an 11.33 point heat total which was enough to secure him his second straight win on the New Zealand Pro Series and with that, the number one ranking in the Under 20 Men's Division.

"I am just happy to be surfing at the event here this weekend and thanks Aerial7 and Backdoor for supporting all of the young surfers in New Zealand, this has been a cool and very fast paced event".

McKenzie Bowden, Kehu Butler and Jules Craft were the other finalists. In the Girls division, Jasmine Smith got the best of a low scoring final against Gabriela Sansom, Grace Spiers and Bianca Sansom.

"There was a massive drift and we all struggled to find waves out there. I am pretty stoked to win, it wasn't a great start to the day conditions wise but this event has been a good practice run for the worlds".

The Aerial7 Backdoor Pro Junior was the third nationally sanctioned Pro Junior event in 2013. The first event was the Rip Curl Pro held at Raglan followed by the South Island Championships held at Dunedin.
