Willian Cardoso: he won his first major surf contest

The 32-year-old surfer from Florianopolis spent 12 years competing in the Qualifying Series (QS) on a quest to join the elite of surfing.

Now, he is one of the happiest surfers on the planet. Not only he joined the Championship Tour (CT) but also won his first major event.

Cardoso had already done well in Bali by finishing his campaign as a quarterfinalist. This time, the Brazilian regular footer beat Julian Wilson in the final.

"My heart is about to explode. After I got through my quarterfinal, I was feeling good and starting to think I could go all the way. I have worked so hard to get to this moment," expressed Willian Cardoso.

The marathon day of surfing in Bukit Peninsula kicked off early in the morning and was only finished minutes before sunset.

The World Surf League (WSL) event was the first to be exclusively broadcasted on Facebook and the fourth contest of the season won by Brazilian surfers.

"I had to be at my best today. I can't believe I won! I beat Julian Wilson, Mikey Wright, and Filipe Toledo, and this is the best day of my life."

Cardoso, who had a CT experience in 2015 as an injury replacement, jumped 11 places on the leaderboard, from 16th to 5th.
